Moose Day
What is Moose Day?
Moose Day is an annual survey conducted with Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Grand Teton National Park, and Bridger-Teton National Forest. It is census of the moose population in Teton County, WY that takes place each year in late February or early March. Observations made by citizen-scientists are combined with data collected by wildlife managers to paint a more accurate picture of moose numbers in the area. Teams of two to eight individuals are assigned parcels, often near private lands or developed areas where WGFD surveys are challenging, to record moose observations. This data helps monitor moose population trends in the area over time. Moose Day is a rewarding winter project that brings the community together while fostering a deeper connection to the valley’s wildlife and wild lands.

Did you know?
A little-known fact about moose in the Jackson area is that they are one of the few wildlife species that can thrive during harsh winters. Unlike many animals that migrate or hibernate, moose are well-adapted to deep snow and cold temperatures, using their long legs to navigate snowy terrain and feeding on willows and other woody plants. Riparian areas, particularly near rivers and wetlands, provide critical winter habitat for moose.
